Skagway

After meeting with our Land Tour Directors, we left the ship around 8 or 9 am. It gave us a few hours in Skagway before we left on a train ride via the historic White Pass & Yukon Route Railway.

The first thing I did was order my box lunch for the train ride then headed out to find the book store. That day was 7/21/07, the day the final Harry Potter book was available for purchase.

Needless to say, they had already sold out of 'The Deathly Hallows', much to my disappointment.

I strolled the streets of Skagway, shopping, snapping photos, getting wet from the rain.

Here's a view of Skagway, taken from the Zaandam.
It's very green.

This is a photo, taken from the ship, of a ferry. The ferry is a common transportation method used in Alaska. Many folks get from town to town and island to island via the ferries in Alaska.

At about 12 noon, we met our Tour Director, Suzie, and boarded the WPYR train (White Pass & Yukon Route). This railway is a tribute to those men and women who created the first fully integrated transportation system to the Yukon after the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898.

A view of Skagway moutains, taken from close to the train depot. IMO, a magnificient shot of the mountains.

The White Pass & Yukon Route Railway took us through a journey back in time as well as the beautiful scenery of the area from Skagway, AK to Fraser, BC.

If memory serves me correctly, this photo was taken as we crossed the border into the Yukon.

We travelled on some very steep sheer cliffs and over deep gorges. Those of us a bit afraid of heights chose to remain seated in the railcar and tended not to look down over those high, sheer cliffs.

I met Becky and Jeff on this train and spent much time with them during the rest of the tour.

Below are some more photos.

This, too, I believe was taken as we crossed into Fraser, BC.

Another beautiful view from the train.
